Finding a reputable Abyssinian breeder is the most important decision you'll make as an Abyssinian owner. Here's the complete checklist ā every question you should ask before committing to a deposit.
Health Screening Questions
PRA-b DNA Testing
- Have both breeding cats been DNA-tested for PRA-b (Progressive Retinal Atrophy)?
- Can I see the test results for both parents?
- Are both parents clear, or are any carriers?
PRA-b causes progressive blindness. A DNA test is available and reputable breeders test all breeding cats. This is the single most important health test to ask about. See: Abyssinian Cat Health Problems
PK Def DNA Testing
- Have both breeding cats been DNA-tested for Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency (PK Def)?
- Can I see the test results for both parents?
- Are both parents clear, or are any carriers?
PK Def causes hemolytic anemia. A DNA test is available ā any reputable breeder will have results readily available.
Renal Amyloidosis
- What is the kidney health history of your lines?
- Have any cats in your breeding program developed renal amyloidosis?
- At what age do you recommend starting annual kidney panels?
There is no DNA test for renal amyloidosis ā ask about the line history directly.
HCM Cardiac Screening
- Are breeding cats cardiac-screened for HCM?
- Can I see current screening results?
Health Guarantee
- What health guarantee do you offer?
- What does it cover and for how long?
- What is the process if a kitten develops a genetic condition?

- Are your cats TICA registered? Can I see the registration papers?
- At what age do you release kittens? (12ā16 weeks is standard)

Kitten Socialization Questions
- How are kittens socialized ā exposure to children, dogs, handling, different people, noise?

Red Flags to Watch For
- ā No PRA-b DNA test results
- ā No PK Def test results
- ā No TICA registration
- ā Kittens available immediately with no waitlist
- ā Kittens released before 12 weeks
- ā Unable or unwilling to show you where kittens are raised
- ā Price significantly below market ($800 or less)
- ā Pressure to decide quickly or pay a deposit before you've asked questions
What a Reputable Breeder Will Ask You
A good Abyssinian breeder interviews buyers as thoroughly as you interview them. Expect questions about your living situation, experience with cats, other pets, your plans for the cat's lifestyle, and whether you're prepared for a high-energy breed. If a breeder asks nothing and just takes your deposit, that's a red flag.
Price Expectations
Pet quality Abyssinian kittens from reputable breeders typically run $1,200ā2,500. See: How Much Does an Abyssinian Cat Cost?
After You Bring Your Kitten Home
Start harness training early ā Abyssinians are most receptive as kittens and among the easiest breeds to train. See: How to Train a Cat to Wear a Harness and Best Harness for Abyssinian Cats. Establish a relationship with a vet familiar with the breed and schedule annual kidney panels from age 2 onward.
