Savannah cats are one of the most expensive and complex breeds to purchase responsibly. Generation (F1āF5), legal status, health testing, and temperament vary dramatically between catteries. Getting this wrong is a very costly mistake. Here's every question you should ask before committing to a deposit.

Generation Questions (Ask These First)
- What generation is this kitten ā F1, F2, F3, F4, or F5?
- Can I see the full pedigree documenting the serval lineage?
- Is this kitten TICA registered?
- Is Savannah ownership legal in my state/city? (Verify independently ā laws change)
Generation matters enormously. F1 and F2 Savannahs are the most exotic and most expensive ā and require the most experienced owners. F4 and F5 are more manageable for most households. See: Savannah Cat Temperament
Health Screening Questions
- Do you screen breeding cats for HCM annually?
- Who performs the screening ā a board-certified cardiologist or a general vet?
- Can I see current cardiac screening results for both parents?
- What genetic panels do you run on breeding cats?
- What health guarantee do you offer and what does it cover?
See: Savannah Cat Health Problems

- At what age do you release kittens? (12ā16 weeks is standard)
- Are kittens vaccinated and microchipped before going home?
- Do you require a spay/neuter contract for pet-quality kittens?
- Can I visit your cattery in person or see a video call?

- Do you have experience placing Savannahs with active/outdoor owners?
Kitten Socialization Questions
- How are kittens socialized ā exposure to children, dogs, handling, different people, noise?
- Are kittens raised underfoot in the home or in a separate cattery space?
- Which kitten in the litter would you recommend for an active/adventure household?
- What is each kitten's individual personality like?

What a Reputable Breeder Will Ask You
Reputable Savannah breeders are highly selective about buyers ā especially for F1 and F2 kittens. Expect detailed questions about your experience with exotic breeds, your living situation, other pets, and your plans for the cat. If a breeder asks nothing and just takes your deposit, walk away.
Price Expectations
F1 Savannahs: $10,000ā$20,000+. F2: $5,000ā$10,000. F3āF5: $1,500ā$5,000. See: How Much Does a Savannah Cat Cost?
